LISTENING PRACTICE 1

As the saying goes "Practice makes perfect", so let's get down to work.

Go to 6 Minute English and choose one of the programmes from 2009. Listen to it and hand in the following information:
  • Title
  • Brief summary
  • What you've learnt
IMPORTANT: As you can read above, this listening practice is to be handed in in class. Also, for the last point, I'd like you to tell me what you've learnt in terms of language rather than content.

  1. I've just listened "The Digital Divide".
    It's about how computers and internet affect to the society. I've learnt the meaning of digital divide.

  2. I have listened to the "shopaholic" programme, and it´s very interesting.
    It´s about people who spend their money without control, and they have the compulsive feeling of buying anything they see, even if they don´t have the money to do it.
    I have learnt you won´t find hapiness in any object, it doesn´t matter how expensive it is.

  3. I´ve listened "Spider invasion"
    It´s abaut two women who talk abaut fear of spiders in a program. They don´t like spiders, but they don´t have a phobia. They talks to a former arachnophobe.
    I´ve lernt new vocabulary such as "cold turkey" and "mass influx"

  4. I chosed "Spirel museum at 50´s". It´s an interview, where the interviewer Dima ask Rebecca(a recognized architec) about unmissables places. In particular they talk about the Guggenheim Museum and the words used by a BBC journalist to describe it.
    I learnt same vocabulary:
    Unmissable: Its must to be see
    To stir: To make people feel a strong emotion
    reckon: to think something it´s true
    landmark: A famous place, a building or another structure.
    balbous: round like an sphere
    a curving wave: spiral
    badly maimed: serisly injured
    reinvented notions: created new ideas

  5. I´ve listened "HOROSCOPES AND ASTROLOGY".
    ·Brief summary:It is about two women (Kate and Jackie) who talk about horoscopes and astrology and hear from a horoscope writer.
    Jackie is Virgo and kate is Aquarius. They asked to horoscope writer if he had a knowledge or interest in astrology, but she said she didn´t have interest and believed less in astrology because she was given a formula (she had to write something good, something bad and somethig was possibility to happen). Later, she told that horoscope endure because people read the newspapers o magazines so they want to know about themselves.

    I´ve learnt new vocabulary such as:to take something with a pinch of salt, formula, endure,sceptical and trivialise.
